The Application Questions should be answered in 250-350 words each.

1.  Nearly all Fellows are placed in 'high-need' schools that are located in low-income communities. Why do you want to teach in a high-need school?

2. The most important responsibility of a teacher is to ensure high academic achievement for all students.  Describe a skill or ability that will help you fulfill this responsibility and provide an example of how you have effectively demonstrated this skill or ability in the past.

3. Teaching Fellows will face new and significant challenges during their first year of teaching.  Describe a professional, personal or academic challenge you have overcome, and how that experience will contribute to your success as a Teaching Fellow.

Your responses to the Application Questions provides us with information not captured elsewhere in the application. We use your responses to evaluate your writing and critical thinking skills, and more importantly, to gain a sense of your commitment to teaching students in DC Public Schools.

Applicants will also be asked to upload a current resume.  Your resume should include the following information, where applicable:

1.  Work history in chronological order--including dates of employment and descriptions of responsibilities and accomplishments.

2.  Any previous achievements-- academic, professional or personal.

3.  Any community involvement or volunteer experience.

4.  Any teaching, tutoring or other volunteer experience with children.

4. Register for required testing.

Though not a requirement for applying to the program, the DC Teaching Fellows requires that all Fellows take and pass the Praxis I test before starting the pre-service training instute. Praxis II is also required for Fellows assigned toteach elementary education and all secondary subject areas.  Fellows assigned to teach Special Education and ESL are not required to take a Praxis II test prior to the pre-service training institute.

We encourage applicants who are invited to interview to register for the Praxis exams early; doing so helps to ensure that all testing requirements are complete prior to the start of our training institute.

Click here to see our testing requirements.

5. Select an interview day (selected candidates only).

The most outstanding candidates will be invited to participate in a DC Teaching Fellows Interview Day. You will participate in a 6-hour session with approximately 8-10 other candidates and two DCTF interviewers. Applicants will be asked to:

· Teach a five-minute lesson to the larger group

· Discuss previously distributed articles on an      urban education issue

· Respond to a specific classroom scenario

· Participate in a one-on-one interview with an interviewer from the Fellows program

6. Await the decision.

DCTF will notify candidates eligible to teach secondary math and science within two weeks of their interview dates. Candidates eligible to teach all other subject areas will be notified no later than 45 days after their interview day.  This policy allows us to provide the greatest flexibility possible in meeting the district’s need for outstanding teacher in every subject area.
